What you need to know first

A GUIDE TO FASTING

JESUS TAUGHT US HOW TO FAST:

Matthew 6:16  “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.”

FASTING TIPS

Always drink plenty of water when fasting - at least 2-3 litres throughout the day. Do not Dry Fast it is very dangerous – Jesus drank water during His fast, the Bible said he was HUNGRY afterwards and NOT THIRSTY, indicating He had drank water during His fast. Keep a bottle of water with you. Monitor and restrict your activity. Rigorous exercise is not recommended when you are fasting. For the fit and healthy a good walk at a moderate pace is OK.  However, if you are on water only we recommend you delete exercise for the time being.  DO NOT FAST if you have medical or dietary conditions, which would make fasting unwise. If in doubt consult your doctor.

WHAT BIBLICAL FASTING IS NOT

Fasting is not a means of manipulating God to do our will.  It’s not a hunger strike to force God to do what we desire. Through fasting and prayer we position ourselves to come into line with God’s will and His plans. We humble ourselves and surrender our desires to Him to find and submit to His will for us.  Fasting also is not a way to earn brownie points with God.  The only thing that gives us merit before God is the sacrifice of Jesus. Fasting is not a diet.  Our motivation is not one of losing weight, even though this is a side effect

1. Start Where You Are

We are all at different places in our walk with God. Likewise our jobs, daily schedules, and health conditions are all different and place various levels of demands on our energy. Whether you’ve fasted before or this is your first time the most important thing is to start where you are. Your personal fast should present a degree of challenge but it’s very important to know your own body, know your options, and most importantly seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

**Remember, the goal of fasting is not just to go without food, but to draw nearer to God.

2. Choose Your Type of Fast

While preparing for your fast, it is important to choose ahead of time what type or combination of fasting you will pursue. This will help you position yourself to finish strong. As you prepare to fast, it is important to choose a fasting plan that works for you. While this section provides some general information about different types of fasts, as well as some suggestions on how to create your own fasting plan, it is important to mention that there is nothing more inherently spiritual about one type of fast as opposed to another.

2a. Total Fast

A water only fast is the normal fast referred to in the Bible. This is how Jesus and the New Testament church fasted. A water fast requires that no food or drink other than water is consumed. Periodic water fasts can be very beneficial, but extreme precautions should be taken. For some people it is hard to perform effectively at their jobs and have energy for their families while drinking only water. We recommend consulting your physician first and water fasting only for a day or two unless you can get away or your job allows you to really disconnect so you can give your best energy to the fast. Remember, when Jesus went on His forty day fast He went by Himself out into the wilderness.

2b. Daniel Fast

The foundation of the Daniel fast is fruits and vegetables. Some starchy vegetables and dairy could be included, depending on the individual. The Daniel fast is a great model and can be extremely effective for spiritual focus, bodily discipline, and purification of the body and soul. In the book of Daniel we find two different times wherethe prophet Daniel fasted. In Daniel 1:12 he only ate vegetables and water and in Daniel 10, while the passage does not give a specific list of foods that Daniel ate,it does state that he ate no rich (or choice) foods, as well as no meat or wine. Based on these two verses we can see that either type of fast or a combination of the two constitutes a Daniel fast.

2c. Specific Food Fast

In this type of fast you omit a specific item(s) from your meal plans. For example, you may choose to eliminate all red meat, processed or fast foods, or sweets. Most people can incorporate this type of fast relatively easily. It can also be a great solution for people with specific dietary needs or medical conditions that create certain limitations.

2d. Juice Fast

A juice fast is simply consuming vegetable and fruit juices and water instead of solid food. Many people include whey protein in their liquid plan as well. This is one of the most popular and effective fasts. Even if you choose not to make your entire fast liquids only, substituting one or two meals for liquids is a great alternative.

2e. Media Fast

While fasting typically refers to refraining from specific food items you may also find it extremely beneficial to fast from a regular activity or habit. This might include things such as television, social media, and the like. Prayer and fasting are not just about connecting to God but also about disconnecting from the world. Try to tune out some of the regular distractions of your day as much as possible. Replace that time with things that will nourish you spiritually.

2f.  Fasting while nursing or pregnant

Strict fasting while pregnant or nursing also is not recommended. If you are in this incredible season of life but would like to participate in the 21 day plan, here are some great options for you to consider with the approval of your physician:

• A modified Daniel fast including whole grains, legumes, calcium, and iron supplements

• Fasting sweets and desserts and/or red meats

• Fasting certain diversions (television shows, movies, social media, etc.)

* If you are a pregnant or nursing mother, your priority is the health of your baby God has entrusted you with.

2g. Children’s fast

Children should NOT fast food as their bodies are growing and they need the nutrients.  If they desire to join, let them abstain from fast-foods, sweets or Television.

BREAKING YOUR FAST

Care should be taken when breaking your fast. Your stomach is cleansed and sensitive like a babies’ You cannot resume eating normally as this could severely effect your health.  Generally we should take as long to break the fast as the period we fasted for. Start by taking a thin slice of apple the first day, the second day, ad a bite of banana, the third ad one bite of toast, etc.

DURING YOUR FAST

Read Consistently

It is better to read a little every day than to try and knock out two hours of Bible reading or devotions in one sitting. It is so important to digest the Word in absorbable chunks. Don’t bite off more than you can chew and certainly don’t compare your “performance” with that of others. If you miss a few days, pick up at the next reading but stay with it and don’t give up. The key is to keep this simple and make it sustainable.

Read Prayerfully

Talk to God as you’re reading. Don’t rush through. If you come across something you don’t understand, pause for a moment and ask God about it. Reading prayerfully is making space and time to talk to God and giving Him time and space to talk to you. Taking time to meditate on God’s Word is just as important as reading it.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DEVOTIONAL TIME WITH GOD:

·Take time to worship your Heavenly Father and give thanks and praise for who He is and all that He has done and is going to do in your life and the lives of others.

·Read and meditate on God’s word (as above).

·Bring your prayers and petitions to your Heavenly Father. He may lay people on your heart that are not on your list. Pray for them when the Holy Spirit quickens you.

·Pray in your heavenly prayer language (tongues) because this is when the Holy Spirit can pray on your behalf.

·Talk to God and take time to listen. He wants to give you wisdom, knowledge, revelation and the power to overcome the enemy.

·Keep a journal during your prayer times. It will encourage you when you look back and see what God is doing and has done in your life.

Let the enemy be defeated through your complete surrender to God through His Son Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Allow God to move in and through you! Don’t give up and expect great things

DEVELOP A LIFESTYLE OF PRAYER

We can learn from three things that Jesus did...

Mark 1:35  “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed”

• A CERTAIN TIME

Jesus got up very early in the morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. In order for prayer to work, we should do the same. Make a daily appointment with God and keep it.

• A CERTAIN PLACE

Jesus had a prayer place. Your prayer place needs to be an undistracted environment where you can pray out loud and perhaps have some worship music playing in the background.

• A CERTAIN PLAN

Go into your prayer time with a plan. If it changes that’s fine. When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He gave His disciples a prayer outline. We call it the Lord’s Prayer.

CORPORATE FASTING AND PRAYER

During a corporate time of fasting and prayer, a whole nation, community, church or group of saints set aside a time to seek God together.  We lift our voices in unity as we seek God for His mercies and guidance.  As we stand together this year let us humble ourselves before Him and pray His Kingdom come and His will be done in our lives, families, church and nation.

God bless you as you join us in praying in these specific topics during these 21 days.

Ps119: 9 How can a young man cleanse his way?

By taking heed according to Your word.

10   With my whole heart I have sought You;

Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

11   Your word I have hidden in my heart,

That I might not sin against You.

12   Blessed are You, O Lord!

Teach me Your statutes.

13   With my lips I have declared

All the judgments of Your mouth.

14   I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,

As much as in all riches.

15   I will meditate on Your precepts,

And contemplate Your ways.

16   I will delight myself in Your statutes;

I will not forget Your word.

Ps  123 1 Unto You I lift up my eyes,

O You who dwell in the heavens.

2    Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,

As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,

So our eyes look to the Lord our

God,

Until He has mercy on us.

3    Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us!

For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

4    Our soul is exceedingly filled

With the scorn of those who are at ease,

With the contempt of the proud.

Ps119: 17 Deal bountifully with Your servant,

That I may live and keep Your word.

18   Open my eyes, that I may see

Wondrous things from Your law.

19   I am a stranger in the earth;

Do not hide Your commandments from me.

20   My soul breaks with longing

For Your judgments at all times.

21   You rebuke the proud—the cursed,

Who stray from Your commandments.

22   Remove from me reproach and contempt,

For I have kept Your testimonies.

23   Princes also sit and speak against me,

But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.

24   Your testimonies also are my delight

And my counselors.

Ps 124 : 1 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”

Let Israel now say—

2    “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,

When men rose up against us,

3    Then they would have swallowed us alive,

When their wrath was kindled against us;

4    Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,

The stream would have gone over our soul;

5    Then the swollen waters

Would have gone over our soul.”

6    Blessed be the Lord,

Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.

7    Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;

The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8    Our help is in the name of the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.

28   My soul melts from heaviness;

Strengthen me according to Your word.

29   Remove from me the way of lying,

And grant me Your law graciously.

30   I have chosen the way of truth;

Your judgments I have laid before me.

31   I cling to Your testimonies;

O Lord, do not put me to shame!

32   I will run the course of Your commandments,

For You shall enlarge my heart.

Ps125: 1 Those who trust in the Lord

Are like Mount Zion,

Which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

So the Lord surrounds His people

From this time forth and forever.

On the land allotted to the righteous,

Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity.

To sit up late,

To eat the bread of sorrows;

For so He gives His beloved sleep.

3    Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,

The fruit of the womb is a reward.

4    Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,

So are the children of one’s youth.

DAY 11 – WEDNESDAY – Win the lost

Ps 119: 81     My soul faints for Your salvation,

But I hope in Your word.

82   My eyes fail from searching Your word,

Saying, “When will You comfort me?”

83   For I have become like a wineskin in smoke,

Yet I do not forget Your statutes.

84   How many are the days of Your servant?

When will You execute judgment on those who persecute me?

85   The proud have dug pits for me,

Which is not according to Your law.

86   All Your commandments are faithful;

They persecute me wrongfully;

Help me!

87   They almost made an end of me on earth,

But I did not forsake Your precepts.

88   Revive me according to Your loving kindness,

So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Ps 139: 1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

2    You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off.

3    You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

4    For there is not a word on my tongue,

But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

5    You have hedged me behind and before,

And laid Your hand upon me.

6    Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain it.

7    Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

8    If I ascend into heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

9    If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

10   Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me.

11   If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”

Even the night shall be light about me;

12   Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,

But the night shines as the day;

The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

13   For You formed my inward parts;

You covered me in my mother’s womb.

14   I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well.

15   My frame was not hidden from You,

When I was made in secret,

And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16   Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.

And in Your book they all were written,

The days fashioned for me,

When as yet there were none of them.

17   How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!

How great is the sum of them!

18   If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;

When I awake, I am still with You.

19   Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!

Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.

20   For they speak against You wickedly;

Your enemies take Your name in vain.

21   Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?

And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?

22   I hate them with perfect hatred;

I count them my enemies.

23   Search me, O God, and know my heart;

Try me, and know my anxieties;

24   And see if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting.

DAY 12  - THURSDAY – Win the lost

Ps 119: 89     Forever, O Lord,

Your word is settled in heaven.

90   Your faithfulness endures to all generations;

You established the earth, and it abides.

91   They continue this day according to Your ordinances,

For all are Your servants.

92   Unless Your law had been my delight,

I would then have perished in my affliction.

93   I will never forget Your precepts,

For by them You have given me life.

94   I am Yours, save me;

For I have sought Your precepts.

95   The wicked wait for me to destroy me,

But I will consider Your testimonies.

96   I have seen the consummation of all perfection,

But Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

Ps 141: 1       Lord, I cry out to You;

Make haste to me!

Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You.

2    Let my prayer be set before You as incense,

The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3    Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;

Keep watch over the door of my lips.

4    Do not incline my heart to any evil thing,

To practice wicked works

With men who work iniquity;

And do not let me eat of their delicacies.

5    Let the righteous strike me;

It shall be a kindness.

And let him rebuke me;

It shall be as excellent oil;

Let my head not refuse it.

For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

6    Their judges are overthrown by the sides of the cliff,

And they hear my words, for they are sweet.

7    Our bones are scattered at the mouth of the grave,

As when one plows and breaks up the earth.

8    But my eyes are upon You, O God the Lord;

In You I take refuge;

Do not leave my soul destitute.

9    Keep me from the snares they have laid for me,

And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.

10   Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

While I escape safely.

And works righteousness,

And speaks the truth in his heart;

3    He who does not backbite with his tongue,

Nor does evil to his neighbor,

Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend;

But he honors those who fear the Lord;

He who swears to his own hurt and does not change;

And cry for help;

I hope in Your word.

148 My eyes are awake through the night watches,

That I may meditate on Your word.

149 Hear my voice according to Your lovingkindness;

O Lord, revive me according to Your justice.

150 They draw near who follow after wickedness;

They are far from Your law.

3    Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler

And from the perilous pestilence.

4    He shall cover you with His feathers,

And under His wings you shall take refuge;

His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

5    You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

6    Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

7    A thousand may fall at your side,

And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it shall not come near you.

8    Only with your eyes shall you look,

And see the reward of the wicked.

9    Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,

Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

10   No evil shall befall you,

Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

11   For He shall give His angels charge over you,

To keep you in all your ways.

12   In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13   You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,

The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14   “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;

I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

15   He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble;

I will deliver him and honor him.

16   With long life I will satisfy him,

And show him My salvation.”

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

DAY 20 – FRIDAY - Personal needs

Ps  119: 153  Consider my affliction and deliver me,

For I do not forget Your law.

154 Plead my cause and redeem me;

Revive me according to Your word.

155 Salvation is far from the wicked,

For they do not seek Your statutes.

156 Great are Your tender mercies, O Lord;

Revive me according to Your judgments.

157 Many are my persecutors and my enemies,

Yet I do not turn from Your testimonies.

158 I see the treacherous, and am disgusted,

Because they do not keep Your word.

159 Consider how I love Your precepts;

Revive me, O Lord, according to Your loving kindness.

160 The entirety of Your word is truth,

And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

161 Princes persecute me without a cause,

But my heart stands in awe of Your word.

162 I rejoice at Your word

As one who finds great treasure.

163 I hate and abhor lying,

But I love Your law.

164 Seven times a day I praise You,

Because of Your righteous judgments.

165 Great peace have those who love Your law,

And nothing causes them to stumble.

166 Lord, I hope for Your salvation,

And I do Your commandments.

167 My soul keeps Your testimonies,

And I love them exceedingly.

168 I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies,

For all my ways are before You.

Ps 30: 1         I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up,

And have not let my foes rejoice over me.

2    O Lord my God, I cried out to You,

And You healed me.

3    O Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave;

You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

4    Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His,

And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.

5    For His anger is but for a moment,

His favor is for life;

Weeping may endure for a night,

But joy comes in the morning.

6    Now in my prosperity I said,

“I shall never be moved.”

7    Lord, by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong;

You hid Your face, and I was troubled.

8    I cried out to You, O Lord;

And to the Lord I made supplication:

9    “What profit is there in my blood,

When I go down to the pit?

Will the dust praise You?

Will it declare Your truth?

10   Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me;

Lord, be my helper!”

11   You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;

You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,

12   To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent.

O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

DAY 21 – SATURDAY - Personal needs

Ps 119: 169   Let my cry come before You, O Lord;

Give me understanding according to Your word.

170 Let my supplication come before You;

Deliver me according to Your word.

171 My lips shall utter praise,

For You teach me Your statutes.

172 My tongue shall speak of Your word,

For all Your commandments are righteousness.

173 Let Your hand become my help,

For I have chosen Your precepts.

174 I long for Your salvation, O Lord,

And Your law is my delight.

175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise You;

And let Your judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep;

Seek Your servant,

For I do not forget Your commandments.

Ps 84: 1 How lovely is Your tabernacle,

O Lord of hosts!

2    My soul longs, yes, even faints

For the courts of the Lord;

My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

3    Even the sparrow has found a home,

And the swallow a nest for herself,

Where she may lay her young—

Even Your altars, O Lord of hosts,

My King and my God.

4    Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;

They will still be praising You.

5    Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,

Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.

6    As they pass through the Valley of Baca,

They make it a spring;

The rain also covers it with pools.

7    They go from strength to strength;

Each one appears before God in Zion.

8    O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;

Give ear, O God of Jacob!

9    O God, behold our shield,

And look upon the face of Your anointed.

10   For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

11   For the Lord God is a sun and shield;

The Lord will give grace and glory;

No good thing will He withhold

From those who walk uprightly.

12   O Lord of hosts,

Blessed is the man who trusts in You!
